Is TV Dead?

Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn’t have in your home.

David Frost

Years ago, one of my friend from my Marketing Communication class told me that TV and Radio will be dead in the future. She said that everyone is on their smartphones and tablets, nobody is watching TV anymore. As an International student, she had not watched TV for 1 year and she did not even miss it.

To be honest, I had to disagree with her statement. I do agree that there are less people that are interested in watching broadcast TV and buy a radio to tune into radio station anymore. However, it doesn’t mean that it’s the end of TV and Radio. There are still people watching TV at home, connecting it to the internet. Listening to radio in the car and on their phone because it is free music!

TV’s death has been greatly exaggerated over the past few years, but is it true?

Along with the development in technology, consumers have more options to watch content on the most convenient devices. As a Gen Z, I do agree that I watched less TV than Netflix or YouTube on my smartphone. But viewers like me are predominantly the young and affluent people who have time on their hands by contrast with folks who are busy with family obligations and keeping a job.

So.. Is TV dead?

No, it’s simply advanced and evolved. There may be less Gen-Z and millennial watching cable TV , but most of the Gen-X and Baby Boomer are still browsing their TV channels. Remember that you can watch Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime and basically everything on your TV now? This is how TV has evolved, you may not only watch cable TV programs, you have many options like Apple TV, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and more!

I remembered when I moved to Singapore for the first 2 years, I didn’t have a TV. My sister then bought one and we got all excited to watch HD YouTube music videos and do some Zumba workout at home. I also play video games that connects to the TV screen and it is fun!

To conclude, TV simply won’t die but instead it is evolving and will continue to evolve and advance further according to the technology.

What do you think? Is TV important to you? Or it’s simply dead and means nothing in your daily life? Comment down below!

  1. I used to think that TV is dead as many of us now use our mobile phones to watch shows and play games! However, my parents recently bought a smart tv and I have to admit that it’s just so convenient! Just like what you mentioned, I’m able to watch my favorite Netflix shows with just a few clicks.

Although I feel that while there are definitely some improvements on TV that are likely to increase the amount of people watching TV, do you think that businesses should still incorporate TV advertisements to promote their products and services?

    1. Hi XinRui! Thank you for commenting! I used to think so too! TV does look dead without the internet, that is why I think TV is advancing and evolving to be a better device. It is definitely more comfortable to watch Netflix on Tv rather than on your phone right?

I think that business should advertise accordingly to their budget and target audience. If their target audiences are Baby Boomers, then they should definitely spend it on TV advertising to promote their products and services. If their target audiences are Millennial and Gen Z, then maybe they should invest their advertising money on digital marketing instead. Marketers should analyze their audiences to find the most suitable platform for them to advertise on so that there will be no money wasted:)

  2. Hi Nina! I love your informative post! I am one of the Gen Zs that have not touched TV for more than 3 years. I moved to Singapore 3 years ago and live on my own, I find myself being able to pass by the time by studying and watching videos on my smartphone and laptop. I really do think that TV is dead and I will even choose not to buy a TV in the future because I think it is useless for me to do so and I dont want to spend money on things I wouldnt use. What do you think? Is it wise to not buy TV?

    1. Hi Jack Le! Wow, 3 years without TV! That’s really long! I bet there are a lot out there that has the same mindset as you and it is not wrong to think so! It is completely up to your preference if you want to have TV or not in your future house. But where would your furniture point at tho? XD Thats the real question, please do tell me after you have gotten your new place 😛

I think it is wise for you to think before you buy a TV, it won’t be wise to buy one and just not use it. Anyway, Thank you for commenting on my post!

  3. Great post! I do agree that TV is not dead, it is simply evolving and advancing. Ever since I have gotten my new smart TV, I had been nothing but a coach potato. Watching TV is so much better than watching videos on my phone, I even get the chance to watch news which I don’t usually do on my phone. I do agree that TV’s demand might not be as high as smartphone but it does have its own advantages. Do you think that there will be more advancements for TV? Like the functions and design wise?

    1. Hi Miranda, Thank you for reading and commenting on my post! We do have the same idea don’t we? It is nice to watch TV in your free time but remember to rest once in while okay:) Take a walk and go for some exercises will be good for you. I do agree that TV has lesser demand over the years but for the functions I have seen a lot of changes. For example, smart TV, Android TV, touchscreen TV, and more. For the design wise, I think it would stay the same old rectangular shape, it might just get slimmer and slimmer.

  4. I do not think TV is dead, it just evolves into how people uses it. I agree that instead of watching regular shows that national TV provides, we watch other shows and apps like Youtube and Netflix. That shows TV is everything but dead, and a big part of our daily lives, great content ~

  5. I miss TV’s advertisement, I used to memorize all the advertisement’s dialogue and say it out loud all the time. Having a cable TV will allow me to do so, but the content of cable TV has becoming more boring than ever, so I had to switch to smart TV. However, I had lesser chance to watch advertisement that is short and sweet. Instead, I only get to watch skippable ads or super long ads that is boring.

I think if TV broadcasting company will be able increase their creativity and find out what would gain the interest of the majority of people, they will be able to regain the subscribers. But of course, things are more interesting on the internet isn’t it?

    1. Hi Liang Xin Yi, thank you for reading my post! Me too! I remembered the times when I found repetitive advertisements are funny and I would always act it out in front of my friends. Such a nostalgia moment!

I do agree that TV broadcasting company should step up their game in order to gain competitive advantages and win consumers heart again, if they couldn’t do that, they might just have to go online just like HBO.
